The Underbrush led an audience through a patchwork of video, audio, and live performance, asking how we protect and preserve our environments.

 

Phase One: The Underbrush manifested as NPC’s inaugural collaboration. This live, digital, and interactive experience marked the first installment of a continued collaboration. The event took place August 7 and 8th, 2020.

New Phase Collective is a collaboration between a people and their time. These ten artists ranging in theatrical discipline are following the evolving truths of what performance is now, has always been, and can be in the future. This ongoing exploration exists inside a redefined landscape of collective vision, communal health, and shared performance.

New Phase Collective is composed of designers and directors, Kindall Almond, Jacob Basri,  Zach Blumner,  Ebony Burton, Henry Nettleton, Lexx Onigbanjo, Leia Squillace, Tyler Thomas, Anton Volovsek, and Christopher Wong.

KINDALL ALMOND
originally from Colorado, Kindall is a Brooklyn based costume designer and stylist, currently pursuing their MFA in costume design from the NYU Tisch School of the Arts.  www.kindallalmond.com

JACOB BASRI
is currently pursuing an MFA in theatre directing at the Yale School of Drama. He is an alum of the Williamstown Theater Festival Directing Corps, the 2017/2018 Van Lier Directing Fellow at Playwrights Horizons, and an alum of the Lincoln Center Director's Lab. His work has appeared at Sarah Lawrence College, The PIT, The Tank, The Flea, Dixon Place, Columbia University School of the Arts, Yale School of Drama, Williamstown Theater Festival, and Ensemble Studio Theatre.

ZACH BLUMNER
is a freelance illustrator, scenic designer, and art-maker from New York. He’s fascinated by entities that are ephemeral and beings that are reclusive. Graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology and University of Southern California. He currently resides in New York City where he’s pursuing his MFA in scenic design from NYU Tisch School of the Arts.  www.zacharyblumner.com

EBONY BURTON
 is an Oakland born, Brooklyn based lighting designer and art-maker. She is a graduate of Oberlin College and is currently pursuing her MFA in lighting design at NYU Tisch School of the Arts. Credits include Women Screaming (The Tom Collective), Inshallah/Mashallah (Target Margin Theater, Sinbad Lab Series), Amerika! Episode 3 (Church of the Millennials), Male Continence (HERE Arts Center, Summer Sublet Series). HENRY NETTLETON
is an NYC-based director & lyricist originally from Seattle, WA. As a lyricist, his work has been featured by the Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center and the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop. He serves as Co-Artistic Director of Really Really Theatre Group, producing and developing work in both New York City and Seattle. LEXX ONIGBANJO
was born and raised in Houston, TX. Lexx is a production designer based out of Brooklyn. Her interests lie in the intersection of human nature, humanity’s holistic cultural footprint, and our perceptions of self. A graduate of Northeastern University’s Architecture & Urban Studies program, she is currently pursuing an MFA in Production Design at NYU Tisch School of the Arts, the Design for Stage & Film program.

LEIA SQUILLACE
directs theatre and facilitates programs that center community-building and radical humanization. Leia is the Co-founder of Herd, a female-driven, environmentally sustainable theatre company and serves as the current Artistic Director for The Confined Arts at Columbia University. She is a 2020 Sokoloff Arts Creative Fellowship recipient. Her directorial and engagement work has been seen at Roundabout Theatre Company, Asolo Rep, American Players Theatre, Milwaukee Rep, and Two Crows Theatre. Go Blue. leiasquillace.com

TYLER THOMAS
is a director and choreographer. Her work has been shown at The New Ohio, The Flea Theater, New York Musical Festival, HERE Arts Center, Paradise Factory, Signature Theater, and at various theaters across NYU Tisch. Tyler is a former SDCF Observer, member of the Lincoln Center Directors’ Lab, Visiting Artist at the Athens Conservatoire in Greece, Resident Director at The Flea Theater, WTF Foeller Directing Fellow, and 2050 NYTW Fellow. She holds a BFA in Drama and MA in Arts Politics from the Tisch School of the Arts. Tyler is from a small town in Louisiana and, in a way, has never left.

ANTON VOLOVSEK
is a Michigan born, New York City based freelance scenic designer. Recent design credits include: Hype Man (The Flea Theatre & Battery Park City), The Caucasian Chalk Circle (City College of New York), Hair, Celebration, Working, Medusa (NYU-New Studio on Broadway), The Women, Rapture Blister Burn (Stella Adler Studio of Acting), Odd Day Rain, The Perfect Monster, Game Changers (TADA! Youth Theater), Curse of the Starving Class (PTP, Williamstown Theatre Festival), A Man of No Importance (University of Michigan). Recent associate credits include: Blue Ridge (Adam Rigg, Atlantic Theatre Company), Good Grief (Jason Ardizzone-West, Vineyard Theatre), Sweat (Wilson Chin, The Public). Founder of New Phase Collective. Currently at Tisch School of the Arts at NYU pursuing his MFA in scenic design. Graduate of the University of Michigan. Go Blue! CHRISTOPHER WONG
is a freelance lighting designer, based in New York City and a native New Yorker. He is resident lighting designer at the Long Island High School for the Arts. He has designed for the Long Island Dance Consortium, Variations Dance studio, and Downstage Dance company for the past three years. He has also worked at Lightswitch NY on live event and architectural projects across the nation. He is currently pursuing his MFA in lighting design at NYU/Tisch.
